How To Donate A Car Or Truck To A Charitable Organization

Charitable organizations often need funding, and some will accept creative options to raise that money. Car donation for veteran charities is one of those options that may not seem like it makes sense, but there can be a lot of benefits derived from a single car donated to the charity.

Several large charities in the US accept cars as donations and sell the cars they receive to raise money to fund programs within the organization. Car donation for veteran charities does not mean your car is going to a veteran, but the value the car has can make a significant impact on veterans through the funds raised. 

If the car is old and does not run, the vehicle can still be a donation. The charity will often sell those cars for scrap to get the value out of them. Most expensive or newer cars will typically go to an auction and be sold to the highest bidder to try and get the most value for the organization selling them.

The value to you is the tax deduction you can make at the end of the year for the donation. The donation amount is based on the value of the vehicle or the price the charity sells it for, but when you have a car you are not using, that deduction can make a difference when tax time comes. 

Picking Up Your Car

When you have a car donation for veteran charities, start with a call to the charity and let them know. The organization will set up a time to pick up the vehicle from your home, and in most cases, you do not have to be there when they arrive. A driver will bring a tow truck to get the car, and they will need the keys and the title to the vehicle before they take it. 

You will get a receipt for the vehicle from the tow truck driver, and if the car sells for a high value, the government allows you to claim a percentage of it, so the charity will amend the receipt to reflect the amount of money that they got for the car.

If you can't be there when the tow service arrives, you can arrange a spot to leave the keys and title for the vehicle with the charity, and they will let the driver know where to look for them. Once the car is picked up, the charity will make repairs or clean up the car to sell it for the most money possible. That money is then put into the programs that the charity runs for veterans in need.
